LISE

Alder was acting strange, but that was his default lately. For a brief moment watching him exit the magick pool, I’d been able to forget his ego and obvious issues with me bedding Morph and Evik. But now, he was crowding my space even though he knew I’d be fighting side-by-side with Morph. He’d suggested I not join the battle. It was all very odd.

“Be careful okay?” Alder whispered to me, our shoulders rubbing.

“Of course. Besides, Morph won’t let anything happen to me.” The whine of the landing gear preceded a jolt as Blue hit the surface. Sirens screamed seconds later.

“Really wishing your ship had stealth mode right now,” Azi moved toward the tail of the ship, Jazmin sticking close behind. They were both suited up and armed; the length of Azi’s sword was nearly as tall as the woman. She basically had a tiny dagger in comparison. Of course, blades weren’t their only defenses. Stun cannons were strapped against their backs and galactic pressure grenades at their belts.

“In Blue’s defense, she normally does have stealth mode. But we ran into a few mechanical issues. I mean, fleeing the Empress and the Danickans and a zillion other issues can do that to a girl.” I patted the curve wall of the hull affectionately. Blue didn’t respond. She was grumpy with me. I’d deal with that later, assuming we all survived.

The exit ramp hissed open, thudding against the ground and revealing that the fight had already started and we were still at the mouth of hell waiting to enter.

Dozens of Bufo soldiers stood at the ready.

“Blue? A little assist?”

“Oh, now you want my help?” she replied cattily. But she did what she did best, saving me from a tight spot. Engaging her rear propulsion and excess gas purge to create a flamethrower effect that lit the whole damn place on fire. Bufo scattered, their screams further igniting the late evening.

Azi and Jazmin rushed down the ramp first and if I’d had time to react to the way the other human wielded her sword and started fighting like a barbarian, I would have. It was absolutely unexpected and she was, blow for blow, a match for her mate.

Evik and Alder went next, the latter tossing a glance over his shoulder, his gaze lingering on me a little too long for comfort. Focus, idiot! I mentally shouted at him. If the moron ended up dying because he was… well, being Alder, I’d bring him back from the dead and kill him again!

Morph didn’t ask if I was ready. He charged forward, razor sharp wings flexing. Before he was off the ramp, he began shooting the stun cannon. That was kind of a misnomer, as it did more than stun. Depending on the setting, it could blow a crater sized hole through even the toughest alien’s body.

Before I could even lift my own cannon, he’d taken down a dozen Bufo and several Danickans. He veered to the right, the other duos had already gone left and forward.
